And I have the stats to prove it.
If Medium is going to be successful it needs to figure out how to get visibility to new writers.
Changing the font of the M or creating ‘Like’ inflation is not going to be a catalyst.
My message and writing is not for everyone, and I don’t aim to be on the front page. However, I did expect that there would be some organic traffic from tags. If I do not push a link to a FB group or other platform, I get ‘0’.
I liked Medium the first time I saw it, the format is simple and clean. I subscribed just to support the effort. Later, I thought about actually using it and when I asked around it turned out I was co-working with one of the top posters. He walked me through the basics.
He also readily admits he claimed his following in the days when HuffPo was on fire and scouring the world for content and used one of his pieces. I can only assume the other lead posters have similar stories or are known in other markets.
I have been taught that if you are going to shit on something, you must also offer alternatives. I can only offer my user view for improvement:
- I rarely will open anything over 4 minutes. You should have a filter for length.
- When searching and a tag has 40,000 posts, I know it is useless to click it because you will show me the same 5 people with huge followings again. Which brings me to four points:
2a. You seem to have some contextual auto tagging built in. I would potentially force 2 or 3 onto every post, then let the poster add. The goal being to broaden the tag cloud.
2b. I would like a Random button, which shows me posts from the middle of the pack.
2c. In the same vain, I would also like a New button, which would show me un-followed or lightly followed posters.
2d. I would also like a filter button for New, Recent and All.
3. One of the endearing things about Medium is that Ev, is personally involved and engages. Currently, the ‘Staff Recommends’ lack a personal feel and come across much like the algorithm. Which likely makes sense because the same people drive both.
Combining an old fashion editorial component (I say that like I know what it means) to the crowd sourced clapping is a solution worth trying. Likely, you are saying ‘newbie we tried that’, well try again.
I only bother to write this, assuming it will not be read, because I wish for Medium to succeed. Writing has been very good for me and putting it in public has its own merits. Being read is a secondary aspect. The troll limiting features of Medium enable me to be freer and are Mediums true IP.
Thanks to all working to move Medium forward.
